PUNTA GORDA/BRITO, Nicaragua, Apr 25 2017 (IPS) – Less than three years from the projected completion in Nicaragua of a canal running from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean, there is no trace of progress on the mega-project.
Four years later, China-backed Nicaragua Canal struggles to take off the ground, which has caused residents to call for its termination.
In 1902, Nicaragua came in second to Panama as the site for an American-built canal. The Panama Canal had its centennial in 2014. At the event in Managua, Ortega promised that the canal would help to reduce poverty in Nicaragua, the poorest country, after Haiti, in the Western Hemisphere.
Nicaragua and its people could certainly benefit from a working canal. Panama’s has driven double-digit growth in recent years, anchoring a transport sector that makes up a quarter of the country’s $42.65 billion GDP as of 2013, and helping push per-capita income above $11,000.
